Window Blinds - What You Need to Know About Caring For Them

Venetian Blinds
For normal cleaning use ordinary soft clean dust cloths, tilting the slats first up and then down,or you can use your vacuum cleaner with the soft upholstery brush, the surface of the slats is quite smooth and the dust is easily removed if done at regular intervals.
The slats can also be washed, to do this use a damp cloth or a sponge and a mild detergent use cold or warm water NOT hot water tilt the slats as above and protect the floor and the sill from excess water. The blind can also be taken down and put in a bath of warm mild soapy water. (Do not put the headrail into the bath) wash it by letting it soak for about for about 5 minutes, then rinse the the blind and either wipe dry with a cloth or leave out in the open to dry.
Tip. After cleaning, wipe your blind with a sheet of fabric softener to prevent dust from building up.
Wooden Venetian Blinds
Take care when cleaning wood blinds, Do Not use water to clean them, wood is a natural product and using water could either stain them or cause them to warp, the best way to deal with them is to use a lint free cloth or the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner. As with the aluminium blinds the surface is smooth and the dust is easily removed if blinds are cleaned at regular intervals.
Vertical Blinds
These fabric blinds just need vacuuming with a brush attachment or using a feather duster, if there are some marks on the blind these can be spot cleaned by using a sponge or cloth and a mild soap and warm water solution and then dry gently using a cloth. Test first on an out of the way spot to check colour fastness.Do Not dry clean or wash these blinds.
Plastic/Vinyl Vertical Blinds
These blinds can be easily dusted with a clean cloth, if they need more cleaning unhook the louvres from the headrail and put in to a bath of warm soapy water, Not hot water, and gently wash, wipe down with a clean cloth then allow to dry and re hang.
Roman Blinds
Regular light dusting with a feather duster is all the cleaning needed in most circumstances. They can be vacuumed using a hand held vacuum on low suction for more thorough dust removal. If spot cleaning is needed prepare a solution of warm water and mild dishwashing detergent. Dampen a clean cloth in the solution and wring it out, dab the spot until it is gone, Do not rub the fabric. Allow the blind to dry in the completely lowered position.
Do not wash or dry clean fabric blinds unless they have a label saying it is safe to do so
Warning
In the interest of safety, please keep all pull cords and chains out of the reach of children. Move cots, beds and other furniture away from blinds and install devices such as cleats and cord tidies to limit access to cords.
